10 Things to Know Before Starting the Yoga

Taking the initial step to becoming a yogi can be quite overwhelming. Where on one hand, Yoga for beginners program marks the first ideal step, going clueless and unprepared may lead to an unpleasant experience. Prepare the mind and body for this incredible journey ahead with these ten crucial details:

Invest in a Quality Yoga Wear

When setting out for a yoga practice, the foremost thing is to ensure not to let your body feel blocked or uncomfortable in any way. Hence, a careful selection of the right yoga wear and accessories is crucial. Select from a range of semi-fitted to comfortable t-shirts and bottoms in poly or cotton blends that have enough room or flexibility to let your body breathe and perform the asanas without feeling restricted. However, also keep in mind that you shall be performing various bends and excessively loose-fitted clothes can result in embarrassing you during the performance.

Get Ready for a Barefooted Regimen

Yoga is a very elegant, harmonious, and sacred science. There is no place for noise, confusion, or baggage in a yoga class. Wearing sneakers or shoes to a yoga class is not only considered a sign of disrespect, a barefooted practice is preferred in terms of practicality and comfort too.

Select a Style that Suits You

Every individual is different and aspires to gain different benefits of yoga. Even the pace and taste of yogis differ from one another. Selecting a style that suits an individual style preference is advisable. For instance, Hatha Yoga is an excellent yoga for beginners as the style prepares a yogi’s mind and body for advanced practices.

Nourish the Body with Scheduled Yogic Meals

Do not neglect the diet at any point when following a dedicated yoga practice. The role of a healthy, balanced diet is just as crucial as the time of meal intake, ideally three times a day. Include fresh veggies (preferably organic), grains, pulses, fruits, salads in your diet plan for gaining the maximum benefits of yoga. Prepare the food in Ayurvedic Herbs for healing and restorative purposes without compromising on the taste.

Manage Some Time to Relax

In this hurried lifestyle juggling between work, home, and possibly a yoga studio, we often neglect those ten minutes at the end of the yoga session during which we are led to remain in the corpse pose (Shavasana). Don’t do it! These last few minutes are crucial to a successful conclusion of a yoga practice. This is when your body and mind completely relaxes and restores in a single equilibrium and prepares you for rest of the day.

Focus on the Breath

An ideal Yoga practice is a massive cumulative of three things: Asana Performance, Breath Work or Pranayama, and Meditation. Aligning the breath with the movement of the body is the key to an optimal performance.  Focus on each breath as it is a part of your body and your soul during an intensive yoga session.

The Practice is More Inward than Outwards

Yoga is not about becoming externally fit, flexible, and agile, the science teaches us about our inner being and lets us become more deeply acquainted with it. During the practice, you shall experience a transformation that shall commence from within the body and spirit. Be open to this change and surrender to the immense power of this life-science.

Asana Perfection is Non-Competitive

Yoga is self-love! It fosters discipline, love, and integrity in an individual. The essence of yoga is much more evolved than a mere comparison of posture performance with others. Allow your body and mind to gradually fall into the practice of the art. You may push yourself to perform but do not ‘force’ your body beyond its parameters. Also, comparing the performance with a batchmate is not appreciated as the science is all about being ‘you’ as an individual and not someone as a member of a class. The practice and perfection shall gradually come to you.

Open up to Your Teacher

Maintaining transparency with the yoga teacher is essential. Let them know of any medical condition, history, or discomfort you might be experiencing so they can mold the practice accordingly. A Blind practice without awareness or teacher’s guideline is not strictly ill-advisable.

Dedicate to Self-Practice and Learning

Yoga demands patience and perseverance both. Indulge in a dedicated self-practice to adapt to the teachings of the class efficiently. To a great yogi, one must be a greater student first.

Retain these important pointers on your way to the yoga class and make the most of it. Embrace the science of yoga and it shall become a definition of your personality.
